HDRC3: A Distributed Hybrid Deliberative/Reactive Architecture for Unmanned Aircraft Systems

This chapter presents a distributed architecture for unmanned aircraft systems that provides full integration of both low autonomy and high autonomy. The architecture has been instantiated and used in a rotorbased aerial vehicle, but is not limited to use in particular aircraft systems. Various generic functionalities essential to the integration of both low autonomy and high autonomy in a sing...

In-Trim Flight Investigations of a Conceptual Fluidic Thrust-Vectored Unmanned Tail-Sitter Aircraft

The feasibility of using a stand alone Fluidic Thrust-Vectoring (FTV) system for the purpose of longitudinal trim of an unmanned aerial vehicle is the focus of the research presented in this paper. Since the fluidic thrust vectoring requires high pressure secondary air to deflect the engine exhaust gases, this research also provides an analytical toolset for preliminary sizing of a suitable sec...

Meeting Unmanned Air Vehicle Platform Challenges Using Oblique Wing Aircraft

There is an ever increasing emphasis on unmanned vehicles for all kinds of roles. Recent experience suggests that their capability and payoff could be complementary to manned vehicles in combat situations. However, the levels of platform and inter-disciplinary technologies need to be developed to take full advantage of their performance potential as part of an integrated defence system. This ap...

Specifying Autonomy Levels for Unmanned Systems: Interim Report

The viability of Unmanned Systems as tools is increasingly recognized in many domains. As technology advances, the autonomy on board these systems also advances. In order to evaluate the systems in terms of their levels of autonomy, it is critical to have a set of standard definitions that support a set of metrics. As autonomy cannot be evaluated quantitatively without sound and thorough techni...

The Utilization of High Fidelity Simulation in the Support of UAV Launch Phase Design: Three Case Studies

Improvement of the launch phase of a jet powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO), has been the subject of attention in the UAV industry. Use of flight simulation tools reduces the risk and required some amount of flight testing for complex aerospace systems. Full nonlinear equations of motion are used to study and simulate this maneuver and three case studies of ...
